1990s

Lawrence “Larry” Espinoza ’91 has been named National Hispanic Cultural Center Foundation development and membership manager. In 2013, Espinoza started the Sol, a semi-pro soccer team in Albuquerque to first bring professional soccer to the city. He brings extensive fundraising, marketing, public relations, and a passion for Hispanic culture to the NHCC Foundation. 

MuellerGenevieve Garcia de Mueller, Ph.D ’99 and former SPX English Teacher from 2006-2010 is an Assistant Professor of Composition and Cultural Rhetoric and Director of Writing Across Curriculum, at Syracuse University. She researches and writes about how government policies use language and how that language affects people. She teaches policy rhetoric and multilingual writing pedagogy. She is completing a book on U.S. immigration policy while directing the Writing Across Curriculum Fellows Program.  She previously served as an Assistant Professor of Writing and Language Studies, University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. She received her Ph.D. in English from UNM in 2015, MA Literature, Theater and Film, from University of Essex in 2006; BA in Theater from UNM in 2004. 

In July 2019, film and television producer J. Sanchez ’90 was confirmed and accepted into the Producers Guild of America. He recently concluded eleven seasons as showrunner of the Fireball Run series on Amazon. A U.S. Air Force veteran, his newest properties are Arkansas and Unbelievable television series.

2000s

Christine A. Meadows ’09 graduated from the University of New Mexico School of Medicine in May 2019. She plans to pursue a specialty in Neurology. As a medical student, she received the Community of Scholars Research Honors Distinction and received an award as the Best Medical Student in Neurology Core Clerkship. Christine has published numerous peer reviewed journal articles in Neurology and is the co-author of a peer reviewed book chapter entitled, “The Cambridge Handbook of Creativity and Personality Research.” Cambridge University Press. In addition, her research experience spans neurosurgery, neurology and neuropsychology. During her tenure as a medical student at UNM, Christine was manager of the Community of Scholars Journal Club, a School of Medicine Crossroads Mentor, a Community of Scholars Peer Mentor, Secretary of the Student Pathology Association, member of the Steering Committee for the Community of Scholars, member of the Neurology Interest Group, Albuquerque Opportunity Center Medical Student Clinic Volunteer and a panel speaker and tutor for the School of Medicine. Christine is employed as a resident physician at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine. She is a member of the American Association of Neurology, the American Medical Women’s Association and New Mexico Medical Association. In 2017, Christine married Peter J. Micono ’09. Peter is a firefighter and EMT with the Albuquerque Fire Department.

Fr. Timothy MeurerTimothy Meurer ’09 was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Santa Fe on June 15, 2019, at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi in Santa Fe. The next weekend he said Mass for classmates at his SPX 10-year reunion.

Adan Samuel ’10 and Emiliano Vasquez ’05 launched Safe House Distilling Co. in downtown Albuquerque in 2019. Safe House, at 616 Gold Ave. SW, focuses on delivering vodka, gin and whiskey products which are crafted to build upon the New Mexican experience.

2010s

Ashlee GarrettAshlee Garrett ’18 a golfer for Long Island University Brooklyn led the Sharks with a T-15 finish at the Sacred Heart University Fall Invitational, posting a season-low round of 78 during her opening round. The 6-over round helped propel LIU to a team score of 327 on day one, its second-lowest team score of the season. Garrett competed in all 13 tournaments during the 2018-2019 season with five top-15 finishes and a team-leading scoring average of 80.7. She led the Blackbirds in scoring seven times this season and recorded a season-low two-round score of 157 (+14) at the Towson Invitational. Garrett finished 11th at the NEC Championship with a three-round score of 236 (+20). 

Devin Roach ’11 and Taylor Roach ’13 shared their experiences, tips and resources on how to participate in the International Science and Engineering Fair on the STEM Southwest Podcast. Taylor who holds degrees in psychology and marriage & family therapy, started science fair in 6th grade and loved working on behavioral studies. “The Effects of Productivity and Performance on Interruptions” was her first project. Devin is pursuing a PhD at Georgia Tech in mechanical engineering. He pursued science fair research in nondestructive inspection to identify ways to determine the strength of a structure. This project took him to ISEF which helped prepare him to be ready to pursue his PhD. Devin has also co-authored “Advances in 4D Printing: Materials and Applications.”

Alex SaisSt. John’s University (Minn.) senior linebacker Alex Sais ’16 was named to the 2019 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District VI football team in November. The Academic All-District honor is the second consecutive for Sais, who is an accounting major with a 3.81 GPA. Sais ended the season second on the team in tackles, with 87 (37 solo), including 4.5 for loss, one sack and three pass breakups in 14 games this fall. The Johnnies season ended with an NCAA Division III Championship semifinal loss to University of Wisconsin – Whitewater, 35-32.

 

 

New Mexico State University freshman Aidan Thomas ’19 dazzled in his first collegiate golf tournament at NM State Golf Course, claiming individual co-champion honors at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate with a six-under-par 207. His performance in October helped lead the NM State men’s golf team to a second-place team finish at even-par 852. Thomas fired a career-best six-under-par 65 in the third round to rocket up the leaderboard on the final day. He and Wichita State’s Dawson Lewis both hit pars on the 18th green to end in a deadlock at six-under-par 207 overall.
