SPX Fall Sports Face COVID-19
The disruptions to our typical ways of life generated by COVID-19 and the strict athletic guidelines in New Mexico surrounding the disease have made their mark on all sports at St. Pius X High School.

Although we’re not on campus for school right now, St. Pius X students are still making opportunities for themselves!
Music
The 2020 St. Pius X Chavez Vocal Scholarship recipients (clockwise from top left) are: Maia Sanchez, senior; Elicia Rowe, junior; Meghan Stone, sophomore; and Isabela Sena, sophomore.
The 2020 St. Pius X Instrumental Music Merit Scholarship recipients are Olivia Boatman, 9th grade, Percussion; Mark Stotzer, 10th grade, French Horn; Tashina Parker, 11th grade, Harp; Benicio Gutierrez, 12th grade, Trumpet.
For the third year in a row, St. Pius X will be represented at the National Association for Music Education Nationals. Benicio Gutierrez, senior trumpeter, competed in this past spring’s National Association for Music Education auditions. He was selected as a member of the 2020 NAfME All-National Symphony Orchestra (ANHE), Trumpet 3. It’ll be a repeat for Gutierrez who made the cut last year, and a three-peat for Pius thanks to Amanda Stone in 2018.
The 2020 Albuquerque Youth Symphony selectees from St. Pius X are Carmen Brandt (violin), Benicio Gutierrez (trumpet), Leo Kim (clarinet), Frances Ochs (violin 2), Tashina Parker (harp), and Sara Swinson (violin). They will be a part of three youth ensembles, symphony, orchestra, or concert orchestra. The Albuquerque Youth Symphony Program provides students with a high quality music education, instills an emotional connection with and lifelong passion for music, fosters a diverse community of musicians, and offers outstanding symphonic performance opportunities for students to share their musical gifts with the community.
Sports
Jayden Bates, senior, represents not only St. Pius, but all of New Mexico at the 2020 High School Golf National Invitational in Pinehurst, NC. This invite-only tournament field is made up of the top high school golfers across the country. Receiving an invitation is quite an honor since only the best high school golfers are considered. Pius also has the distinct honor of receiving back-to-back invites from the NHSGA thanks to Aidan Thomas ’19.
Senior golfer Samuel Jones grabbed his first tournament win in the Sun Country Junior Tour Stableford Championship this summer at Paradise Hills Golf Course.
Three Pius seniors made the 2020 Soccer All-American Game Watch List! Congrats to Emma Donlin, Marcus Garcia, and Zachariah Pena!
