Hensleys Continue Strong Support of SPX
For St. Pius X High School Foundation Board Member Ron Hensley and his wife Cindy, commitment to Catholic education and to St. Pius X began well before their three children entered high school. Their love of the school community was solidified during their oldest son’s senior year.
Ron helped organize youth sports for the Albuquerque parochial school league and “The Heat” basketball teams for up to 130 parochial school students from third to eighth grade who played in AAU and other club basketball tournaments. The Hensleys’ sons and many of their teammates went on to play at St. Pius and on championship basketball teams in 2008 and 2013.
“Being involved in the parochial league, I saw a lot of kids who would like to go to St. Pius and who would have done well there, but they couldn’t afford it,” Ron says. “It’s good to give back now. There are so many bright kids out there that would really do well going to Pius. There’s just so much support there, spiritual support and parent support. It’s a good place for the kids to be.”
Ron learned that firsthand during the senior year of his oldest son J.J. ’08. “When my son was a senior, he got in a bad car accident and the support from St. Pius was so good,” he says, the emotion of the time still rising in his voice. “We had parents and kids coming up to us, people we didn’t even know, offering us support mentally and spiritually. I would never have gotten that anywhere else.”
Ron and Cindy served with the SPX Athletic Boosters and Cindy managed the Sartan Shop while their children J.J., Kyle ’13 and Brooke ’14 attended SPX. “My kids got a great education and I feel so strongly about recommending St. Pius to families,” Ron says.
When their children graduated from St. Pius X, Ron and Cindy left their athletic booster roles, but Ron soon joined the foundation board. “It’s a good fit to be there helping where I can,” he says. “It’s a blessing to help more kids come to Pius.”
