Girls Soccer and Volleyball Win State Championships​

Fall SportsTop-seeded SPX Girls Soccer (16-5) won the 2019 Class 4A State Championship with a 2-1 victory over No. 3 Albuquerque Academy. The team earned an 8-0 district record. Midfielder Sierra Saenz is the United Soccer Coaches 4A Player of the Year. Forward Grace Romero is the MaxPreps Most Valuable Player for the state tournament. Named First Team All-State are defender Alyssa Doty, defender Nicole Taibbi, midfielder Emma Donlin and Romero. Named Second Team All-State are goalkeeper Alicia Barela, defender Enmarae Torres, defender Mykel Torres, Saenz, midfielder Hannah Irons, and midfielder Kyera Chavez. Since 1999, the year of the first state championship tournament, the Sartans have won nine of the 20 championships.

St. Pius X Volleyball (22-3) is the 2019 Class 4A State Champion! No. 1 seed St. Pius beat fifth-seeded Albuquerque Academy soundly in three games in the final to take the blue trophy. The team posted an 8-0 district record on its way to the 4A State Tournament. SPX earned its last volleyball championship in 2016. Named All-State are Francesca Bell, Ashley Cheshire, Megan Dennis, Delaney Fenton, Cameron Martinez and Kennedi Rey. Named All-Metro First Team are Cheshire, Martinez, Rey and Ally Salas. Named All-Metro Second Team are Bell and Dennis. Named All-Metro Third Team are Fenton and Lauren Hilton. Named All-Metro Academic Team are Cheshire, Hilton, Martinez, Rey and Salas. Named All-District First Team are Bell, Cheshire, Dennis, Martinez, Rey and Salas. Named All-District Second Team are Fenton and Hilton. Named All-District Academic Team are Cecilia Calvo, Cheshire, Dennis, Hilton, Martinez, Rey, Salas and Juliana Trujillo.

Boys Soccer

SPX Boys SoccerThe St. Pius Boys Soccer team (12-6-2) advanced to the semifinals in the Class 4A State Tournament, losing to Los Alamos in a shootout after a score of 1-1. The team was 8-0 in district play. Earning Second Team All-State honors are striker Marcus Garcia, midfielder Michael McGrath, midfielder Heber Rios, defender Zach Pena, defender Ethan Johnson, and goalkeeper Coleman Speer.

SPX FootballSPX Football (4-7, 3-2 in District 2/5-4A) received the ninth seed in the Class 4A state playoffs. The Sartans lost in the first round to Ruidoso 35-13. Named First Team All-District are Trebor Toledo, running back; Brandon Cast, tight end; Isaiah Griffin, wide receiver, who finishes the single season leader in receiving yards at 891 and this year broke the career receiving mark with 1,937 yards for his career; Nick Pascuzzi, wide receiver; Aaron Deller, offensive line; Ezekiel Jaramillo, offensive line; Joaquin Medina, defensive tackle; Scott McGaha, inside linebacker; and Ryan McCormick, defensive back. Named Second Team All-District are Derek Rivera, quarterback, who finishes in the top four all time in stats for a quarterback at St. Pius with 212 completions 3,119 yards and 33 touchdowns; Deller, defensive tackle; Cast, defensive end; Breyden Payton, defensive end; and Dominic Sais, defensive back. Honorable Mention All-District are Adam Contreras, offensive line; Aaron Swallows, wide receiver; Logan Garcia, wide receiver; Marco Ybarra, running back; Nick Vargas, outside linebacker; Marcus Rael, outside linebacker and Nick Torres-Smith, defensive back. Named First Team All-Metro are Griffin at slot receiver and McCormick at safety. Named Second Team All-Metro are Pascuzzi, wide receiver; Toledo, running back; Deller, tackle; Sais, cornerback; Cast, defensive end, Medina, defensive tackle; and McGaha, inside linebacker.
