St. Pius X swimmer Leo Kim closed his senior year with a 2022 state title in the 100-yard breaststroke, swimming it in 59 seconds. He also broke school records in the 100-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard individual medley, and he is the district runner up in the 50-yard freestyle. Grady Whitson is a district champion in the 200 free and 500 free, and Sara Swinson is a district champ in the 100-yard breaststroke. Ava Machtinger is a district runner up in the 100-yard backstroke.
Boys Basketball Reaches State Semifinal
SPX boys basketball team (19-9) beat Valley 37-31 and Albuquerque Academy 53-46 to reach the semifinals in the 2022 Class 4A state championship tournament. The 4-seeded Sartans fell to eventual state champion Highland 60-49 in the semifinal game in the Pit. The team is the 4A District 5 Runner Up.
Girls Basketball Seeded 12th in State Tournament
The St. Pius X girls basketball team (11-13) earned a 12-seed in the 2022 Class 4A state championship. The Lady Sartans lost in a first round nail-biter to Highland 48-45. The girls earned third in 4A District 5.
SPX boys wrestling earned third at district and five wrestlers placed second in their weight classes: Benjamin Bustamante, Lawrence Havelka, Aaron Moya, Santiago Aragon Roybal, and Jacob Silva. Team captain Jared Robbins earned third in his weight class. Eight out of ten Sartans advanced to state.
St. Pius X girls wrestlers Claudia Aragon and Zia Budagher advanced to the state tournament. During the district match Aragon placed 2nd in her weight class and Budagher took 3rd. Abigail Rael placed in the top six.
