Wrestler Sanchez Brings Home State Championship

SPX Wrestler Matthew SanchezSt. Pius X wrestler Matthew Sanchez, at 120 pounds, this season earned a 2020 4A state championship, a district championship and a Joe Vivian Classic championship.  First year wrestler Ryan McCormick placed sixth at state in the 160-pound division and earned a fourth-place finish at district. They were joined at the state wrestling tournament by Jared Robbins at 138 pounds, a fourth-place district finisher. Placing fourth at the district tournament were Tyler Brown, Santino Chavez, Ulban Aragon and Benjamin Bustamante.

The 2019-2020 SPX boys and girls swim teams both won the annual Horseman Invite leading up to district were the boys finished second and the girls finished third. At the state competition, the team qualified in all six relay events, with the boys team medaling in the 200 and 4000 free relays. State finalists for the boys were William Mummert, Thomas McCarthy, Christopher Perea, Elijah Barela and Leo Kim. State finalists for the girls were Adrienne Dexel, Olivia Gordley, Ella Johnson, Sara Swinson and Lauren McCarthy.

Girls Basketball 2020SPX Boys Basketball 2020The 2019-2020 girls varsity basketball team posted a 14-14 record, placed second in the District Tournament and earned the 16th seed for the State Championship. Named First Team All-District was Katrina Kelley and Second Team All-District was Amelia Gallegos.

The 2019-2020 boys varsity basketball team ended their season with a record of 9-16, with a fourth place finish in the District Tournament. Named All-District First Team was Jonah Arnett, named Second Team was Sebastian Ellison, and named All-Metro All-Academic was Gabriel Neel.

Spring Sports Season Grounded by Pandemic Response

Sports competition was canceled for the spring due to the Covid-19 shutdown of schools and events beginning in March 2020. The Dorados and SPX Cheer Team saw their State Spirit Competition canceled, while the entire seasons of baseball, softball, track and field, tennis, golf, water polo and rugby were halted just as competition began.
