SPX Baseball Honored for Summer Success

​​Sports scheduling changes due to Covid-19 last school year shifted the high school baseball season into the summer months. St. Pius X earned the 4A State Runner Up title and many players earned honors.

Gatorade named pitcher Matthew Cornelius ’21 its New Mexico Baseball Player of the Year. The award recognizes outstanding athletic excellence and high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field. He joins recent SPX Gatorade Player of the Year recipients Marcus Garcia ’21 (soccer), Hayden Walker ’20 (baseball), and Haley Rizek ’18 (track and field). Cornelius also was named the New Mexico Baseball Coaches Association Player of the Year.

The New Mexico Baseball Coaches Association named several Sartans to its All-State Teams.

1st Team Pitcher: Matthew Cornelius, senior; Jordan Rodriguez, junior 

2nd Team Pitcher: Nolan Esterly, junior

1st Team Infield: Nolan Esterly, junior; Josh Salas, senior; Gene Trujillo, sophomore

1st Team Outfield: Jordan Rodriguez, junior; Mathew Cornelius, senior

2nd Team Outfield: Evan Muhlburger, senior

1st Team Catcher: Justin Romero, senior

1st Team Utility: Jordan Rodriguez, junior

1st Team Designated Hitter: Gene Trujillo, sophomore
