Welcome to
St. Pius X Connections magazine

Dear Friends,

Wishing you a Blessed Advent Season and Christmas from St. Pius X High School!

Despite the restrictions placed upon us this year, our students and alumni continue to strive and thrive.  It has been a challenge to let go of the familiar and embrace change. The Sartan students are taking up the gauntlet of change and moving on.  Read in this issue of Connections about our National Honor Society’s community service work and the commitments of our student athletes to play at the collegiate level.

Learn how Dr. James Mitchem has made improving education in the Chicago area his life’s work, and hear from Fr. Samuel Hakeem how God used another time of international crisis to open him up to the idea of vocation.

We hope you enjoy this issue of our magazine and that you experience the peace of Christ this Christmas.

Sincerely,

Barbara Rothweiler, Ph.D.

Principal

For Dr. James Mitchem ’75, developing an education system in which students who are deemed at-risk are positioned for post education success has been his life’s work. He states it comes down to what we truly believe about all kids.

After God used a time of serious economic crisis to open him to the idea of vocation, Fr. Samuel Philip Hakeem ’05 now finds himself in vocation work during the COVID-19 pandemic, the biggest crisis many people have ever faced: “Many young men and women have had the past seven months to sit and think, and the Lord has had the opportunity to set the religious life upon their hearts.”

“I saw a lot of kids who would like to go to St. Pius and who would have done well there, but they couldn’t afford it,” SPX Foundation Board Member Ron Hensley says. “It’s good to give back now. There are so many bright kids out there that would really do well going to Pius. There’s just so much support there, spiritual support and parent support. It’s a good place for the kids to be.”

Letters to veterans and service members, a winter supplies drive and a children’s books drive are opportunities the officers of the St. Pius X High School Chapter of the National Honor Society have created to help NHS members serve their community despite the restrictions of COVID-19.
