Welcome to
St. Pius X Connections magazine

Dear Friends,

St. Pius X High School continues to thrive in our pursuit of goodness, discipline and knowledge. We entered hybrid learning in March with great success as small groups of physically-distanced and masked students joined their teachers in the classroom while other groups of students attended class virtually. Watch a video of our return by clicking here. We expect to fully return to 100% in-person learning on April 6, 2021.

Pandemic restrictions did not stop Sartans from creating great art. We are so proud to share the accomplishments of our visual art students in the New Mexico Scholastic Art Awards.

Also read in this issue of Connections about the work of Jessica van Loben Sels ’12 with the National Institutes of Health during the pandemic. Learn how Rhiannon (Schroeder) Samuel ’10 works to bridge the people of New Mexico with their lawmakers. And Fr. Graham Golden ’04 shares his journey from St. Pius X to the Norbertine Community of Santa Maria de la Vid Abbey in Albuquerque’s South Valley.

We hope you enjoy this issue of our magazine in hope and good health!

Sincerely,

Barbara Rothweiler, Ph.D.

Principal

A fascination with microbiology has taken Jessica van Loben Sels ’12 around the world, earned her a PhD, and put her at the heart of the national pandemic response.

“St. Pius empowered us to engage our peers and have a broader impact,” said Rhiannon (Schroeder) Samuel ’10.  “When I think of St. Pius I get a feeling of warmth, a feeling of being at home in a space that wanted the best for me and brought out the best of me.”

“The thing about Pius I carried with me the most was the fact it was an intellectually provocative and open environment,” said Fr. Graham Golden ’04. “I was doing a lot of searching and was an open critic of the Church, and it was a space where that was possible. It was open to sincere discourse around issues, thoughts, ideologies and worldviews.”

Eleven St. Pius X High School visual arts students received 16 New Mexico Scholastic Art Awards in the 2021 juried competition.

All-American games and college commitments announced by Sartan Sports. As St. Pius X High School entered a hybrid schedule, the doors opened for all sports to begin abbreviated schedules in March.

“Gateway supports the importance of not only education, but the opportunity to dream, believe, have faith and achieve,” Gateway President Shane Westhoelter said of the company’s support of SPX Foundation events. “By providing quality education and support to youth and young adults, we can help fuel the passion to build a better community and impact the world.”
