St. Pius X Connections 2021 Issue 3

Welcome to
St. Pius X Connections magazine

Dear Friends,

The 2021-2022 school year has gotten off to a great start. This fall we are happy to see students fully engaged on campus and in all their athletic, arts and academic pursuits under our banner of “Teach Me Goodness, Discipline and Knowledge.”

In this issue of St. Pius X Connections, we catch up with Alex (Chavez) Rich ’08 and learn about the Vatican digital media program she and a handful of other young professionals from throughout the world participated in this year. Alex credits St. Pius X with forming her Catholic faith and providing the foundation for her lay ministry.

We also mourn the losses of Mike Brown ’64, a New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame boys basketball coach with Academy, and longtime SPX girls basketball coach Phil Griego, who led the Sartans to state championships three times in his 23 years here.

The time, friendship, learning and faith students share at St. Pius X High School create connections that last a lifetime. In the effort to offer those shared experiences to even more students, the St. Pius X High School Foundation presents its annual Jamie Tinnin Memorial Sporting Clay Shooting Fundraiser on October 30th. We hope you’ll learn more about how to get involved and support St. Pius X.

Wishing you peace and health for the coming months. St. Pius X, pray for us.

Sincerely,

Barbara M. Rothweiler, PhD

Principal

My biggest takeaway from the whole experience was to trust God,” Alex (Chavez) Rich ’08 said. “(Reflecting on) the whole week, the whole program, I would have never dreamed of this in my wildest dreams, it just felt too big. But trusting God to guide my footsteps, led me to this beautiful journey that I couldn’t have dreamed or planned on my own.”

Chuck Reynolds ’64 asked Mike Brown ’64 where he had learned to be so successful as a basketball coach. “He studied the Xs and Os and learned strategy, but he also learned how to deal with kids,” Reynolds said. “His first premise was to care about them. And that was very, very evident.”

“Just by his record, you knew he was a tremendous coach,” SPX teacher Kevin Hillsey told the Albuquerque Journal. “He had such an innate feel for the game. He was not afraid to take some chances where others might not. But as good a coach as he was, he was an even better person. You don’t get many friends like that in your life.”
